Your Ideal Day of Eating

Imagine taking all of the “food rules” off the table.

There are no “good” or “bad” foods – just foods that you enjoy eating and nourish you on some level.

What would you choose to eat if you could eat whatever you wanted and still make progress towards your weight loss goal at the same time?

What about if you wanted to feel your absolute best – both physically and mentally – and have lots of energy to have your most productive day ever?

What if you didn’t have to follow a particular diet, but instead you just made whole, minimally processed foods your comfy baseline and all the choice that this brings with it, with plenty of room left over for other “fun” foods that don’t quite fit that bill, but you still enjoy eating?

What would your ideal day of eating look like if you knew you could eat whatever you wanted tomorrow, and the next day too?

What about your ideal week?

Your ideal month?

These are all fun questions that I like posing to my clients.

How can you give your body what it needs while making it enjoyable at the same time?

Some people think they would choose to eat cupcakes (for example) every day, but that’s likely, not true.

My guess is you wouldn’t feel your best eating cupcakes every day.

In fact, cupcakes would probably start to lose their appeal after a few weeks.

But let’s imagine that you really love cupcakes (or substitute another treat you enjoy) and would really like to incorporate a cupcake into your ideal week of eating; what do you think would be the best way of doing that while still progressing towards your weight or health goals?

For example, imagine it’s Wednesday (today) and you’re really looking forward to eating that cupcake on Saturday.

When that time comes, how would you want to approach that eating experience?

Wouldn’t you want to savor it fully and maximize the enjoyment rather than mindlessly gobble it up?

And perhaps not just any store-bought cupcake would do, but rather only the ones that come from your favorite bakery where you love the beautiful surroundings and cozy vibe, where you can enjoy sitting down and having it served up to you on a fancy saucer while you sip an espresso at the same time.

Or maybe you get the cupcake to go (because of the pandemic;)) and come back home where you can put it on a nice plate, brew yourself a cup of tea to go along with it, and really enjoy the cupcake to its fullest without distractions.

And then…

How would you take care of yourself after you eat the cupcake?

Would the cupcake signal to your brain that now it’s time to eat more sugar?

And if that’s the case, how would you ensure that that doesn’t happen?

What would you eat at the meal following the cupcake?

Cupcakes aside…

If you were planning your ideal day:

What would you want to eat for breakfast?

What would you eat for breakfast if mid-morning snacking wasn’t an option?

What would you eat for lunch?

What about dinner?

What time would you want to eat dinner if you knew that night-time snacking wasn’t an option?

How would you want to make the whole experience of eating more pleasurable?

Have some fun with it.

Get strategic.

Plan out your tomorrow.

Think about what you already have in your fridge and cupboards.

Maybe you need to pick up a few things at the store.

Plan your tomorrow, today.

Then when tomorrow comes around, try eating precisely that – nothing more.

By planning now, you don’t have to make any decisions tomorrow.

But make sure you like your plan!

How will you take care of yourself?

How will you ensure that you’re making progress towards your goals while also making it doable and enjoyable?

How will you make sure you’re treating your body well and giving it what it needs?

The key to lasting weight loss (and health, for that matter) is finding a way of eating that’s enjoyable, sustainable over the long-term, and allows you to reap the results you want while also living life on your terms. Then finding that sweet spot where you can maintain all of those simultaneously.

All my best,

Elaine
