A fun question I like posing to prospective clients is this:
If you could lose weight (or insert any health goal) on your terms, what would that look like?
Below are some typical responses I hear:
I want to eat and socialize like “a normal” person.
I don’t want to give up dessert, chocolate, or wine.
I want to eat what my family has and not have to prepare separate meals for myself.
I don’t want to have to track calories.
I want to stop thinking about food all of the time.
I don’t want to spend hours meal prepping.
It’s interesting.
People often assume that the weight loss process needs to be miserable, but that usually happens for one of the following reasons:
We adopt other people’s thoughts about weight loss.
Other people offer up their thoughts about their own experiences, and we take that as the truth.
We adopt a restrictive mindset.
We think lots of thoughts that make us feel restricted and deprived, i.e., “I’m not allowed to eat x, y, or z.” Or it has to be “all or nothing.”
We don’t realize we have agency over our own experience.
We’re often unaware of how our thinking creates our feelings and how our action (or lack thereof) stems from our mindset. And that the solution is to change our thinking, NOT necessarily “try harder” or develop more willpower.
We make the process harder than it needs to be.
We adopt unsustainable practices, and then we can’t (and don’t want to) maintain them long-term.
We outsource ownership to an authority outside ourselves.
It’s not to say we can’t seek support from outside experts or guides (hello!), but we are the experts of our own bodies, and it’s vital we re-establish that connection if it’s lost.
For example, eating in a way that aligns with the results we want AND allows us to feel good simultaneously (not feeling miserable or hating our lives).
What does weight loss on your terms look like for you?
For example, maybe if you didn’t have to give up all of your favorite foods, you would be more willing to make “sacrifices” in other areas to get the results you want.
Perhaps they wouldn’t even feel so much like sacrifices but investments in your health.
Or, if you knew you could still enjoy “wine and dessert” and socialize like a “normal person” and “eat out at restaurants,” maybe you would be more willing to allow some discomfort at other times.
Discomfort could look like following through with your food plan for the day or allowing an urge to eat a bunch of cookies or chocolate (because you’re seeking some comfort) without responding to it.
